at Brown University majoring in Biology with strong interests in fashion design and environmental sustainability. Through creating wearable and unique pieces using a variety of secondhand and ethically-sourced materials, she hopes to explore solutions to environmental issues within the fashion industry. In general, she’s really interested in making the fashion industry more sustainable and better integrated with the natural world around us.Shira currently serves as a Design Team Director for Fashion@Brown, one of Brown University’s largest student-run organizations. To date, she has created four runway collections for the annual Brown Fashion Week runway show: Symbiosis (2025), Convergence (2024), Metamorphosis (2023), and Second Bloom (2022). Second Bloom was featured in StyleWeek 2022 alongside other emerging student and professional designers. While the traditional clothing garment is constructed from synthetic or plant-based fabric, worn, soiled, and eventually burned in a landfill, the life cycle of the flower is regenerative—while its body decomposes in the soil, its seeds ensure the return of a new plant for the following year. What common thread, what unique experience, what motivations could I use to assuage critical parents and confused-but-supportive friends? Do my creative and academic interests occupy separate spheres and if one interest is less visible, does that make it less important? Someone once suggested that perhaps I should design hospital scrubs. However, I think the parallels between the two disciplines run far deeper. At its core, biology is the study of the interplay between elements of life — an exploration below surfaces to better understand the inner workings of an organism, a disease, or even an entire ecosystem. Similarly, fashion design relies on the synergy of many different elements to contribute to an overall appearance. I’ve recently concluded that the symbiotic relationship between interests is what fundamentally shapes one’s world perspective. Symbiosis experiments with color, layering, and opacity to both reveal and celebrate what may not be visible on the surface. Constructed from layered lace and sheer organza mixed with structured plaids, the garments bring to light the hidden play of the visible and invisible in the design of our social, intellectual, and Inspired by the repetitive motions of the body through dance, I decided to explore how motion erodes and shapes — both literally, as seen in natural landscapes and the aging of the body, and figuratively, within emotions and the mind. I drafted all of the patterns for this look myself (this was the first corset I had ever created). The corset also had a built-in bra for stability while dancing.Unfortunately, none of the F@B photographers were able to capture my dancer during the show, and the garments were auctioned off immediately afterwards. During high school, what had begun as a simple hobby progressed into a full-on clothing business in which I sewed my own designs and upcycled thrifted clothing and fabrics to sell on my Instagram page, @shirathrifts. While I have always been interested in fashion, my love for clothes and design flourished over the course of those years, inspiring me to take on more ambitious projects and full collections in college. Using the same pattern I drafted for the denim corset shown in my collection,&nbsp;Second Bloom, I first created each section of the corset by assembling, hemming, and sewing the fabric scraps together. Then, I lined each section with muslin for support. As I lacked a metal eyelet kit, I hand-sewed around each eyelet to reinforce the fabric down the lace-up back. I modified the original corset pattern slightly for the denim corset in order to create a more cropped fit, and thinner straps that would stay more flush to the body. Additionally, I expanded the modified pattern to include multiple different sizes. curtains, and thrifted jeans, each piece in this collection transforms the unwanted or unwearable into something of both aesthetic and practical use.&nbsp; As a strong advocate for eco-friendly fashion, I designed this collection to challenge the dichotomy between “trendiness” and “sustainability” within the fashion world. This was my first collection ever, made for Fashion@Brown’s Spring 2022 runway show.
